School of Professional Studies, Double-Degrees

Policy
Purpose:

Communicates allowable degree combinations and prevents award of multiple degrees, majors, or concentrations for which requirements have extensive curriculum overlap that this would not meet the spirit of earning a unique degree.

Applies to:

Students enrolled in School of Professional Studies programs

Campus:
Edwards
Lawrence
Policy Statement:
A student can earn two undergraduate degrees in the School of Professional Studies as long as the student has completed at least 15 hours unique to each major. The student must complete a minimum of 135 total credit hours (120 credit hours for the first degree + the additional 15 credit hours unique to the second degree). All core requirements in both degree programs must be satisfied and the student must have achieved at least the minimum GPA requirements in both degree programs.

The following combinations of degrees are allowable within the School of Professional Studies:
  • Two (2) or more Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. These must be different B.S. degrees, not different concentrations within the same B.S. degree.
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.), or Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) and B.S. degrees as long as the degrees are in different majors. Students may not, for example, earn both a B.A.S. and a B.S. in project management.
  • Bachelor of Professional Studies (B.P.S.) and B.S. (or B.A.S.) degrees as long as the degrees are in different majors. Students may not, for example, earn both a B.P.S. with a concentration in project management and a B.S. in project management.
  • Students may complete the requirements for more than one concentration in a major or degree program but should be aware that they are not completing a second degree or major. The following example illustrates this point: A student who completes all requirements for both the project management concentration and the applied data analytics concentration is earning one degree, the Bachelor of Professional Studies (B.P.S.).
  • Students may earn a B.A. or a B.P.S. with more than one major but not more than one B.A. or B.P.S. degree from the School of Professional Studies.
  • Students normally may not earn a B.A. degree and a B.G.S. or B.P.S. degree.
Consequences:

Requests for exceptions must be discussed with the Assistant Dean – Student Affairs of the School of Professional Studies. If approved by the Assistant Dean, a petition will then be generated that must be presented to and approved by the School of Professional Studies Academic Council.
