1 Promotion
EECS will follow the School of Engineering Rules and Regulations on Promotion. In addition, EECS establishes the following department criteria. The following criteria are exemplar and not definitive. The EECS Department conducts an annual evaluation for all Professors of Practice as described in the EECS Professor of Practice Evaluation Plan. When considering Professors of Practice for Promotion, The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science considers the following: (1) Does the candidate contribute to the teaching mission of the department? (2) Does the candidate provide quality advising and mentoring to students? (3) Has the candidate provided service to the university and the discipline? (4) Has the candidate contributed to the overall success of the department? (5) Has the candidate participated in continuing professional development?
Promotion in rank of assistant and associate professors of Practice may occur after two terms in the current rank and only at the time a new limited term appointment is offered after review by the department and college/school level and with the approval of the Provost.
1.1 Criteria for Promotion and Tenure to Associate Professor of Practice
For promotion to Associate Professor of Practice, the department expects that the candidate is an effective classroom teacher and student advisor and mentor, and demonstrated service to the Department, School, University or the profession at large.
Teaching: Candidates for promotion to Associate Professor of Practice, are expected to have demonstrated effective teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
Service: Candidates for promotion to Associate Professor of Practice are expected to demonstrate effective student advising and mentoring of students. Professor of Practice are also expected to perform service to the department’s constituent communities: the department, the School of Engineering, the University, the State, the Nation, and the profession. Professor of Practice are also expected to continue their professional development.
1.2 Criteria for Promotion to Professor of Practice
An Associate Professor of Practice in EECS considered for promotion to Professor of Practice is expected to have taken on leadership roles in the department, the school, the University, engineering/computer science educational community, and/or the nation. The candidate must continue to meet the criteria of the department described above. Candidates for promotion to Professor of Practice are expected to demonstrate participation in significant professional development activities.
Teaching: Candidates for promotion to Professor of Practice should demonstrate a sustained record of teaching excellence, innovation in the classroom and curricula, and leadership in developing the department and its curricula.
Service: Candidates for promotion to Professor of Practice have demonstrated sustained commitment to advising and mentoring students. Providing leadership service in the department, the school, the University, and/or the nation. Typical activities are to take leadership roles on service committees. Candidates for promotion to Professor of Practice are expected to demonstrate participation in significant professional development activities.
